Lately some of my students have been making comparisons between the alpha male rivalry in The Hunger Games and Twilight. And it's no mystery what team Suzanne Collins, author of the series, is on. At least in Twilight, both of the hunks have somewhat ordinary names. Edward is a bit more geeky, but even Jacob sounds like a boarding schoolboy in a sportscoat.
Now in The Hunger Games, one of the lead lads is named Peeta. You name one of your main characters after a piece of bread, and then to make matters worse it turns out he's the son of a baker?! Why don't we just call him hot pocket?
It's really not fair for our dough boy, especially because he has to go up against Gale. Of course Gale is strong, lean, knows his way around weapons--a real outdoorsy-type. His name means "strong wind." The dude is practically a Navy SEAL. He's eats people like Peeta for a snack while tracking down wild antelope in the forests of Panem, using only the sun as his guide. The guy is a Greek god in the making.
I will say that a Peeta becomes a bit more studly as the series progresses, but that's mainly because Gale is stuck back in the woods shooting deer with his boyscout abilities, while Peeta is cuddling Katniss in a cave and performing other acts of valor in the games.
Peeta is a good guy. Maybe the best guy. But will it be enough to overcome his bread-based name? Will Gale live up to the unstoppable force of his own label? Or will Bakery Boy take the cake? For these two boy wonders, the game's in the name.

Gale is much better than Petta. Gale loves Kitness since they were very little and they always hung out with each other since the beginning. But Petta, made up this thing with Haymitch and he said he loved Kitness just for the games. Its not true love like that one between Gale and Kitness. This is why Gale is the best one for Kitness.
ReplyDeleteI think Petta is better for Katniss. Even though he said he loved her for the games, he kind of fell in love with her. It broke his heart when she said that they need to stop this love drama at the end of book one. Gale is also ok cause he likes her too. And Katniss liked him first. I guess Katniss is kind of unlucky because she has to choose one or the other and they are both hot. ^_^

ReplyDeleteThey are both good friends to Katniss. But if I had to choose I would pick Peeta. Peeta protects and understands Katniss and he loves her.

DeleteGale and Petta both are nice. I just finished reading the series and Both Gale and Petta sacrificed alot to keep Katniss alive. Its so much like Twilight. That's why I love this series so much. Shows so much love between Gale, Katniss, and Petta are so strong.

ReplyDeleteI'm on both sides. Gale is cool and is perfect for Kitness and Petta is ok for Kitness. In the third book, Petta kinda admits that the couple thing is over and Kitness could go back and love Gale.
I think Gale and Petta are both ok for Kitness. But I'm on Team Gale because he is the one who cared for Kitness, since the death of her father

ReplyDeleteWhich is so stupid because The Hunger Games is NOTHING like Twilight, I mean think about it, Twilight has a vocabulary that a THIRD GRADER could understand(not that a third grader should be reading it but they could still comprehend it), and The Hunger Games is more advanced. Also, in Twilight Bella is completely useless and half the series she just WHINES and WORRIES and COMPLAINS over and over! Come on really, she needs to get off her lazy butt and DO SOMETHING. In The Hunger Games, Katniss is all over the place, she's helping everyone she can, and she is a REAL HEROIC FIGURE!!!
